Why is my viewport performance so slow?

Nira is designed to provide a highly interactive viewing experience, even for extremely large models. In fact, a 200 million triangle model should perform just as smoothly as a 1 million triangle model.  Your experience should remain consistently smooth on any device, including older mobile devices.   If you're experiencing consistent lag or frame-rate issues, please review the potential causes and suggestions outlined below.  Contact us if you need further assistance, and we will help you troubleshoot the problem.

Reporting to us:

When reaching out, please include the following information:

  • Nira asset URL if possible. We understand that some data needs to remain private so you can skip sharing this with us if needed.
  • Connection device (e.g., Windows laptop, iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy Tablet S9)
  • Connection type (wired, Wi-Fi, or cellular)
  • A screen recording would be very helpful but no need to put the effort if you don't have the time.

Common causes:

The most likely scenario is that your internet bandwidth is saturated (someone on your network is uploading or downloading a large amount of data).  Uploading data while you're actively using Nira will lead to poor viewport performance.  Your viewing sessions should improve once your network is less saturated.

Performance can also arise if you upload a single, very high-resolution 3D mesh (i.e., above 300 million triangles).  While Nira can support such high-resolution models, it's best to upload the model in parts. Most applications will process the model as parts or offer an option to split the model into parts during export.  Ideally, optimize the model to under 150 million triangles total, as this still provides ample geometric resolution for most models. You can upload an unlimited number of textures, photos, and points (laser scan) without negatively affecting viewport performance or load times.  So there is no need to resize, optimize, or limit textures, photos, or points.

It is also import to choose the proper asset type when uploading.  Be sure to choose Photogrammetry when applicable.  PBR, Sculpt, and Volumetric Video will store additional data, including potentially unnecessary information, this will slow down loading and rendering.

Troubleshooting:

To help identify the problem and determine if it is related to Nira, please try the following steps:

1. Try viewing different assets. If you don't have another asset in your Nira account, you can view some of the sample assets on the Nira.app homepage. If Nira is still slow with all the assets you've tried, proceed to the next steps.

2. Try a different web browser. If you're using Chrome, try Firefox, MS Edge, or another browser. If this resolves the issue, update your primary browser and/or restart your computer.

3. Try a different device.  If you're using your desktop, try accessing the same asset on your mobile phone. If this resolves the issue, restart your computer.

4. Try a different network. Disable Wi-Fi on your mobile phone and use cellular instead. If this resolves the issue, restart your modem and/or router.

If none of the above resolves the issue, then the problem is likely related to one of our servers, please inform us, and we will address it as soon as possible.
